Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between professional therapy and life coaching?
The answer is in the details, both big and small. Professional therapy is provided by individuals who have completed extensive education and are licensed to practice in their individual states. These practitioners are trained to diagnose and treat individuals who struggle with various mental health disorders (such as trauma, depression, anxiety, and personality disorders) and emotional issues. Because of the added education, licensure, and responsibility, professional therapy does come at a higher financial cost.
Life coaching is focused on the setting and achieving of immediate goals. Often individuals will seek out coaching to help realize their own personal, academic, or career objectives. While technically anyone can call themselves a life coach, typically, this service is provided by both licensed mental health professionals or those with specific and limited certifications.
Determining which service is the best fit for you depends on your needs and goals. As a licensed professional counselor and mental health service provider (LPC/MHSP) I have chosen to provide both levels of services in order to best meet the needs of my clients. Contact me today to get started.
How long can I expect to be in therapy?
There is no definitive answer to this question. This really depends on the individual and why it is they are seeking therapy. For some clients, six sessions were sufficient to meet their needs and reach their therapeutic goals. While others chose to continue long-term (20+ sessions).
Occasionally clients choose to continue to work with me through additional issues or concerns as they arise, while others will choose to schedule periodic check-ins. We will work together to make the best choice for you. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. I’m here to help.
Do you offer a sliding scale?
I do have a limited number of slots available for therapy clients at a reduced rate. If I am unable to offer you one of these slots, you can make the choice to be placed on a waitlist, or I can recommend alternative service providers.
Coaching and consulting services are not offered on a sliding scale.
What ages do you see?
Typically, I only see individual clients ages 12 and up. Exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis.
Do I need medication?
While therapy alone has scientifically been proven effective, there are some clients and/or circumstances when the addition of medication may be beneficial. For some clients, medication use is temporary, and for others it may be more long-term. In either situation, you and your medication provider can determine the best course of treatment for you.
